Sportsmassage

Massage can be very beneficial in sport, through various specific techniques. The enhancement of blood circulation leads to improved muscle tissue function, which can be used to help in the preparation for a contest or for a faster regeneration after an intense training session. In general an improvement of performance is achieved.

Trigger point therapy

A trigger point is a hyperirritable and painful spot in a skeletal muscle if there is pressure exerted and that is associated with a palpable nodule. Compression of a trigger point may elicit local tenderness, referred pain or local twitch response.

The trigger point model states that unexplained pain frequently radiates from these points of local tenderness to broader areas, sometimes distant from the trigger point itself.

Dr. Janet Travell coined the term myofascial trigger point. She followed up for years on her work and became known by treating John F. Kennedy for his back pain.
